Worship in the heavenlies

…‘Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain…’

Revelation 5:12 (NIVUK)

Revelation chapter 5 offers a profound glimpse into the worship that unfolds in the heavenly realm. It depicts heavenly beings and the redeemed uniting in an awe-inspiring symphony of praise to God and the Lamb. At the heart of the chapter lies a mysterious scroll sealed with seven seals, held in the right hand of God (v.1). This scroll symbolises God’s plan of history from beginning to end.

John is struck with sorrow when no one in heaven, on earth, or under the earth is found worthy to open the scroll (v.4). However, the sorrow soon turns to joy as the Lamb, Jesus Christ, who appears as though slain, is declared worthy to break the seals and unveil the contents of the scroll (vv.5-6).

The Lamb’s sacrificial death, victorious resurrection and ascension qualify him uniquely to execute God’s plan. The Lamb’s worthiness prompts an immediate and exuberant response from the inhabitants of heaven which is marked by the singing of a new song (v.9). This song celebrates the Lamb’s redemptive work and his acquisition of people from every tribe, language, people, and nation (v.9). The lyrics proclaim the Lamb’s worthiness to receive power, wealth, wisdom, strength, honour, glory, and praise (v.12). This cosmic chorus illustrates the expansive and inclusive nature of heavenly worship, where all beings, angelic and human, are united in their adoration of the Lamb.

This worship in the heavenlies culminates with the participation of all creation. Every creature in heaven, on earth, under the earth, and in the sea is heard exclaiming blessings and honour to the one who sits on the throne and to the Lamb (v.13). This universal acclamation underscores the scope of divine worship, where every part of creation acknowledges and reveres the Creator and the Redeemer.

The portrayal of heavenly worship in Revelation chapter 5 carries profound theological implications. It affirms the centrality of Christ’s redemptive work as the foundation for worship. The Lamb’s worthiness is the focal point of praise, demonstrating that true worship is always Christ-centred.

John’s recording of this heavenly worship gives us a captivating vision of worship in the heavenlies, where the Lamb’s worthiness inspires an unending chorus of praise. This provides a model for earthly worship where Christians are to focus their worship on the worthiness of Christ, reflecting the heavenly pattern. It is a blueprint for believers, encouraging them to emulate the heavenly model in their own worship practices. By focusing on Christ’s redemptive work, and embracing the inclusive nature of divine worship, we can join the cosmic chorus in glorifying God and the Lamb and experience a taste of heavenly worship here on earth.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, we join the voices of countless angels encircling the throne, the living creatures, the elders, and all creation as they proclaim: ‘Worthy is the Lamb who was slain’. We exalt your name, O Lamb of God, you are deserving of our worship, which we pray will be a sweet fragrance that rises to your throne. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
