The Lamb is my shepherd
‘…For the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd; “he will lead them to springs of living water.” “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” ’
Revelation 7:17 (NIVUK)

Probably the most famous psalm in the psalter begins, ‘The Lord is my shepherd’ (Psalm 23:1). It is a profound metaphor depicting and affirming God’s loving care. The Lord our shepherd:
Provides for us – ‘I lack nothing’ (v.1).
Gives us spiritual rest – ‘He makes me lie down in green pastures’ (v.2).
Guides us – ‘He guides me along the right paths’ (v.3).
Protects us – ‘Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me’ (v.4).
Supplies our needs abundantly – ‘my cup overflows’ (v.5).
Ensures our eternal security – ‘I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever’ (v.6).
Revelation chapter 7 complements the themes of Psalm 23 by presenting a vision of God’s ultimate protection and salvation in the Lamb: Jesus Christ, who will shepherd his people. Both passages of scripture convey a message of hope and reassurance, affirming that believers are under God’s steadfast care:
Provision and Guidance – In Psalm 23, the shepherd provides green pastures and quiet waters, refreshing the soul and leading us in the right paths (vv.2-3). Similarly, in Revelation 7, the Lamb shepherds the multitude, guiding them to springs of living water (Revelation 7:17). This imagery emphasises God’s role in meeting the physical and spiritual needs of his followers, leading them toward righteousness and refreshment.
Protection and Comfort – Psalm 23 speaks of walking through the valley of the shadow of death without fear, comforted by the shepherd’s presence (v.4). Revelation 7 echoes this assurance, depicting the sealed 144,000 as protected from tribulation, and the great multitude in white robes having emerged victorious from great suffering (vv.4-9). God’s role as protector and comforter is a central theme in both passages, offering solace to believers facing trials.
Abundance and Eternal Security – The overflowing cup and the promise of dwelling in the house of the Lord forever reflect a future of abundance and eternal communion with God (Psalm 23:5-6). Revelation 7 amplifies this vision with the great multitude standing before the throne, their robes washed clean by the Lamb’s sacrifice, and the promise that God will wipe away every tear, eradicating suffering and granting eternal joy (vv.14-17).
The Lord as the shepherd is a powerful and enduring image that spans the breadth of the Bible, from the pastoral tranquillity and poetry of Psalm 23 to the apocalyptic grandeur of Revelation 7. Together these passages paint a comprehensive picture of God’s unwavering care and ultimate plan for his people. They remind believers of the continuous presence of the divine shepherd, guiding, protecting, and providing for them in this life and the life to come.
All we can say in response is, ‘Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honour
and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!’ (Revelation 7:12).
Prayer
O Lamb of God, our gentle and constant shepherd, we come to you with gratitude for your loving care for us. As you laid your life down for your sheep, we find refuge in your grace and we trust in your divine provision, now and forever more. In your name, Amen.
