Saved through the life of Christ

For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!

Romans 5:10 (NIV)

I never planned on becoming an enemy of God, but sooner or later we all chose the defiant way of life. So why is it that we are so easily swayed to take that path? There before the first man and woman in Eden were the two trees: one a tree of life and the other the knowledge of good and evil. Wouldn’t you think that life would be the better choice? It seemed like such a quick decision for Adam and Eve to choose death over life, and that was because the serpent made the lie so believable. The one tree that was forbidden was the tree named the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. There it was before their eyes but out of bounds. The minute someone tells you that something is unavailable, that’s when you want it. That is when Satan stepped in to work on the minds of Adam and Eve; to play on the temptation they must have felt. As Paul stated, the good he wanted to do he failed to do, and instead did the opposite of what was good for him and everyone else (Romans 7:19-25). The propensity is within us all to do what we should not.

Now when I do something which I do not want to do, I am not doing so with a plan to harm someone else, but to sate my desire. Unfortunately, our choices can harm others, even when that is not our intent. I doubt very strongly that Adam and Eve had planned to cause the fall of all mankind, but I am also convinced that that was the plan of Satan. Jealousy seems to be his motive, and his plan was retaliation. On the good side, God’s plan was the salvation of mankind long before Satan had even enacted his lie. There we have God, who planned to save us even knowing that we would become his enemy; loving us even when we were unlovable. What love we have in the Father, Son and Spirit.

Did Adam and Eve regret their choices? I am sure they did, and that was the turning point in their fall, away from themselves and back into the arms of God where God desires us all to be. Oh, how much more they must have valued that Tree of Life; valued that relationship with God. If I had not fallen, I would not have discovered the love of God, the value of truth and trust, the treasure of life. How repulsive death and sin has become in my life, and how I wish to tell others of this as well. I did not have the strength within me to do the right things I wanted to do. This is where Christ stepped in, this is where his reconciliation hit its mark. I am now saved through the reconciliation of Christ and made new, made a child of God.

Prayer
Merciful God, it is because of your love that we exist and that we have been saved, saved to become children of God. How precious you are to us, how precious is this life you have given us. We look forward to living with you in the fullness of your kingdom and experiencing all that you have planned for us. We thank you and praise you, our loving God! In Jesus we pray for these things. Amen.
