He has the power

A lot of us enjoy a good superhero story or movie. When I was a child, I remember being quite taken with the Spiderman tales. It was fun reading about a strong, larger than life hero, fighting evil and saving helpless victims. Even now, I enjoy movies where good wins over evil, facilitated by a superhuman or otherworldly being with immense powers.

Even though people today pride themselves on being enlightened and far above and beyond myths and fairy tales, the desire to see good overcome evil is still inside. Solomon said in Ecclesiastes 3:11 that God has planted eternity in the human heart. Because that is true, it’s in our hearts to see good triumph – in other words, we want the happy ending, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow – we want everything to turn out well in the end. And that’s just what we get with God.

The ultimate triumph of good over evil was accomplished on the cross. When Jesus laid down his life for us and then rose from the grave, the powers of evil were definitively defeated. That makes Jesus the quintessential superhero. But unlike in the superhero stories, there are no violent battles, with foes duking it out through brute strength. Through the ‘foolishness’ and weakness of the cross, his power is that of humility and self-sacrifice. The enemy has been vanquished by the gentleness of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
