The Mind of Christ
Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus…
Philippians 2:5 (NKJV)
Jesus is the only begotten Son of the Father (John 1:14), the second person in the triune Godhead, and to have his mind is to have the very mind of God. The mind of Jesus is a mind that expresses love, joy, peace, kindness, gentleness, patience, self-control and humility. These attributes are also the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).
How can we acquire this attitude of mind that Christ exemplified for us? There is only one way: we can ask God for this attitude of mind in believing prayer. The Apostle John explains in 1 John 5:14-15, ‘Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.’ We can see in the header scripture that it is clearly God’s will that we possess the mind of Jesus Christ. So we simply have to request it in believing prayer, and trust God to give us this precious gift of a truly Christlike spirit.
When we are in possession of that gift, it will be like finding the pearl of great price that the gospel of Matthew speaks of: “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.” (Matthew 13:45-46). Jesus is the King of the kingdom of God, and to be Christminded is akin to finding the pearl of great price.
By reading and studying the four gospels by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, we can see the mind of Christ in action as he relates to people, whether they be his disciples or complete strangers. With Jesus’ mind, we too will know how to relate to people, whether they be family, friends, work colleagues, or strangers. The very image of Jesus Christ is being formed in all believers, and, for that image to be complete, it requires the mind of Christ. Galatians 4:19 says, ‘My little children, for whom I labor in birth again until Christ is formed in you…’. Forming the image of Jesus in believers is a good work which God has started and promised to complete in us. Philippians 1:6 tells us, ‘…being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ…’. We can see that it is God’s will that we possess the same mind that is in Jesus Christ, so we can confidently request this in believing prayer.
Prayer
Eternal Father, thank you for your written word, the Bible, which has shown me that I need the same mind that is in Jesus Christ. Please grant me this precious gift – the mind of your beloved Son. In His name I pray. Amen.
