God’s great love
I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

My Grandad once had a problem with dizziness, so he went to his GP, who asked him what sort of dizziness it was, to which he replied, ‘I didn’t know there were two types of dizziness.’
There is a lot we don’t know; a lot to learn; we don’t even know what it is we have to learn. The Apostle Paul talks here about something that is beyond all the learning, all the knowledge, that we have learned, that we have yet to learn, and that we might never get around to learning. And Paul was a very learned man, with a deep knowledge and understanding of scripture. But when he talks about ‘the love of Christ’ in the above passage, it is as though it is beyond any words.
God’s love for us is so multifaceted. I think to myself that surely there’s not much more left to learn about it and yet daily I’m given a new perspective. I guess that just as knowledge of God is infinite and we will never have Him completely figured out, so we are not capable of figuring out the height, depth or width of His love for us as it too is infinite, as the apostle Paul said, ‘For now we see through a glass, darkly…’ (1 Corinthians 13:12 KJV). However, Paul goes on to say, ‘…but then face to face: now I know in part but then shall I know even as also I am known.’
Prayer
Loving Father, thank you for your awesome love for us. You alone are deserving of our praise. We give you thanks in Christ’s name. Amen.
