Let Jesus take the weight off

We’ve all had tasks we didn’t want to do. And when we don’t want to do something, it’s easy to put it off until later, maybe the next day, the next week or even later. Mark Twain is often credited with saying, ‘If it’s your job to eat a frog, it’s best to do it first thing in the morning. And if it’s your job to eat two frogs, it’s best to eat the biggest one first.’ He may or may not have said it, but he might have, and it’s a way to talk yourself into tackling the hardest or worst job first and getting it over with.

I’m often guilty of putting off things I don’t want to do, but the problem with procrastinating is that it can become a weight on your shoulders. That weight can affect you not only mentally, but physically as well. Better to just eat that frog and save yourself the anxiety.

In Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV), Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” He knew what it felt like to have a heavy burden weighing him down. He must have known about his journey to the cross for a long time and it was surely a weight on his heart. So, when he offered to take our burdens, it wasn’t an empty promise. It came from his own experience with carrying burdens and he knew how much it would mean to us and for us.

Rather than letting our problems, large or small, become weights that drag us down, we just need to come to Jesus and let him carry them for us, no matter what they are. And even though we don’t really have to eat any frogs, we might want to reconsider putting off difficult tasks, and ask Jesus to take our burdens before they become too heavy.
