The Father’s gift
“Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.”
Luke 12:32 (NIV)
We can slide by this verse if we are not careful. It is telling us that in Christ, we his children are all blessed with the wealth of God. It amazes me to think that God is sharing his wealth with us, but as God blesses us, we in turn may bless others. We all need the basic needs of life met, but also to hear the message about God and what he has done and is doing in your lives.
Wealth of course can be monetary, but wealth can also be things such as wisdom, compassion, forgiveness, comfort, and strength. The verses 33-34 of this same chapter talk about what we can do with our possessions and our wealth in order to support those in need physically, but it goes much deeper than this. What we possess here on earth is not lasting, and no matter how hard we try, we cannot take physical things with us. The love of God, and his forgiveness, and his faithfulness to us will not end or fade. This is the true treasure in heaven. Verse 33 reminds us: “Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.”
Do we treasure God above our earthly possessions? Is this where our heart is? God is not telling us to live as a hermit under a rock and to prove our faithfulness by giving away all that he has blessed us with. God is helping us to look into our heart to see where our loyalty and our love lies. The Father, we are told in verse 32, is happy to give his children all that they need; there is no shortage of his gifts.
I was listening to my contractor tell me of the damage done to his son, both physical and mental, and the struggles through which he was wading. It was then that he said suddenly that he never knew his son did not believe in God. He went through the motions, he said, at Christmas with the celebration of the birth of Christ, but he did not believe. How often does this happen; we think we know someone, but they never reveal the hurts or lack of faith they have in someone or something, or we ourselves do not confess our faith or lack of it to others.
We all have an abundance of love to give no matter what our position in life. Some of the most precious gifts we can give are found in the way we care for each other; the love we show, the time we give just to listen, the way we acknowledge them and give them worth. Time is a most precious gift. Prayer is a gift we all can give. I am just touching on the gifts we can give. I know you can all think of many more. So do not be afraid God says to give away your love. I have much more in store for you. The supply will never end.
Prayer
Merciful God of all things good, your abundance of love for us will never diminish and never fade. Teach us to love as you do, to give ourselves away to others in a way that will bring them home to you. We are always amazed by your great love. We praise you, our God. In Jesus I pray, Amen.
