Living water

Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”

John 4:10 (NIV)

Can I say that water comes in many forms? You have those ice cubes in your drinks, that water vapor in the sky we call clouds, ice cold water out of the tap or in the streams, but I love it just hot in my cup in the morning. There is something comforting about holding the warm cup and drinking down the warm liquid, and as I do so it reminds me of the Water of Life provided by God. God provides all water, and they say we are made up of about 60% water. Water is life, we do not live very long without it.

In John 4 we have the story of Jesus meeting the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. He could have gone into town with his disciples, but he had a very important meeting with a woman and so he waited patiently for her. He did not care about the taboos put upon human beings by their hate and bias; he had salvation on his mind. He begins his meeting by asking her for a drink of water. At this point he has shattered the walls of division and has stepped through into her world.

Jesus will go on to show her that he knows more about her than the fact that she is a woman of the Samaritan culture, he will dive deeply into her life and beliefs, breaking down the misconceptions she has. God loves all people despite our prejudices and lack of inclusions. He cares about us as a culture and as individuals. As the header scripture reveals to us, Jesus is a gift to all mankind. We all need to know him. He is the Living Water poured out for us, giving us his life.

As a child we have many don’ts placed upon us. I remember being told not to look at people because they were different than I was. The fact that I could not understand the language of another child or that they looked different than me did not stop me from playing with them. We learn hate and prejudice from others. I believe that all began in the Garden of Eden as the serpent Satan placed mistrust in the mind of Eve. The walls that Satan put up, Jesus takes down.

We all need water to live, and we need the Water of Life to live the life God intended us to. I believe we have just begun our journey in this world, for the next has no end. What surprises will be revealed? What new lessons will we learn? Someday we will all be one in Jesus; no walls or divisions. We will all be filled with Living Water, Jesus himself. The curse mentioned in Revelation 22:3 will be removed; we will no longer hunger and thirst because the Lamb of God will be our centre of life. Drink deep brothers and sisters; drink of the Living Water of Life.

Prayer
Merciful and almighty God, you fill us with all that we need for this life and for the next. You truly are a God of wonders. Help us to thirst more and more for you. Thank you, Father, for sending us your Son to bring us into your life. In Jesus we pray, Amen.
