People after God’s own heart
“ After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’ ”
Acts 13:22 (NIV)
Do you want to be known as someone who is after God’s own heart? God the Father desires his children to be people after his own heart, the same as David.
So what was so unique about David to be named a man after the very heart of God? First, David had faith and trusted God. In Psalm 18:19, he says, ‘He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me.’ For God to be delighted with David means that God was pleased with him. Hebrews 11:6 states, ‘And without faith it is impossible to please God…’. As for trust, David writes about trusting God many times throughout the book of Psalms, including Psalm 25:1-2: ‘In you, Lord my God, I put my trust. I trust in you; do not let me be put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me.’
A second characteristic of David that made him a man after God’s own heart was his love and obedience to God. King Saul was disobedient to God and was replaced by David, who became King over Israel. In 1Samuel 15:22, Samuel, the judge and prophet who anointed David to be king, said: “Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.”
For us to be men and women after God’s own heart, we need to follow David’s wonderful example of faith, trust, love and obedience to God. And we, too, will be people after the very heart of God. All is made possible through the power of the Holy Spirit and through the faith of Jesus Christ.
Prayer
Holy Father, thank you for David’s wonderful example of faith, trust, love and obedience. Please grant these gifts to enable us to be people after your own heart. Amen.
