Sharing the gospel

But you should keep a clear mind in every situation. Don’t be afraid of suffering for the Lord. Work at telling others the Good News, and fully carry out the ministry God has given you.

2 Timothy 4:5 (NLT)

Paul’s final words to Timothy came at a time when challenges were mounting both for the early church and its young leader. Timothy was facing opposition, discouragement and uncertainty, and yet Paul urged him to make it a priority to share the gospel, despite such adversity. This call is not reserved for church leaders alone, or just for those with the gift of evangelism; all of us are entrusted with the task of sharing the message about Jesus, whether in our families, workplaces, or local communities as we have opportunities to do so.

It’s easy to become distracted by our daily routines and the cares of life, so Paul begins our header verse by saying, ‘…keep a clear mind in every situation…’. The call is to keep focused and be discerning. We share not in our own strength, but with the assurance that God’s Spirit goes before us. It’s also easy to become discouraged when we face ridicule for being a Christian, and so Paul adds ‘Don’t be afraid of suffering for the Lord.’ Sharing our faith will not always be easy. There may be times of rejection or misunderstanding, but as we press on with perseverance and faithfulness, our trials can become testimonies that encourage others to trust in God’s faithfulness.

Working at telling others the good news means actively seeking opportunities to share the story of Jesus. This doesn’t always mean preaching from a pulpit;  it means being present for a friend in need, offering a listening ear, sharing a meal, or simply showing love in tangible ways. It’s about daily, intentional efforts to point others to Christ through our words, our actions, and the way we live our lives. It’s not about having all the answers, rather it’s about being willing and available to participate in God’s missionary work by planting seeds of hope and sharing God’s love.

What might this look like in practice? Well first of all, pray for opportunities. Ask God daily for moments to share his love with others, letting our lives be a testimony of the hope and peace found in Jesus. This can be followed by showing compassion, kindness and empathy as we build relationships based on genuine care and concern. Then, when the time comes, don’t shy away from sharing your faith, speaking boldly and gently and with respect. And finally, trust God with the results: it is God who changes hearts, not us. We are called to faithfully tell others the good news, he is responsible for the growth.

The sharing of the gospel message is an ongoing task for all Christians down the generations and in our world that is longing for hope, we carry a message that heals, restores, and brings life. Let us keep a clear mind, not be afraid of opposition, work at telling others about Jesus, and fulfil the ministry God has given us.

Prayer
Loving Father, may we be emboldened by the Spirit to work at telling others the good news of Jesus, through our words and the way that we live. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
