The Good Confession

Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

1 Timothy 6:12 (NIV)

It was in the middle of an inspection of the washing machine. Replacing a part was not going well. it was old and stubborn and refused to return to its original place. The tension grew with each attempt. How refreshing it was when the young man stood up straight and said: ‘Jesus, if I am going to do this, I need your help.’ Together we put that part in its place. It would be so easy in this world to give in to our frustrations. Our battles can be large and small, but there is always an opportunity to fight our battles in a way that expresses our faith; faith in this world or our faith in Jesus.

Jesus declared his faith in God his Father before the world, as he refused to bow down to the demands of the Romans and the Pharisees. He knew the value of his choice, the worth of the Kingdom of God. He knew the price he had to pay to bring his children through the fire to purify them. Throughout his lifetime he expressed his faith and trust in God; at his baptism, at the changing of the water into wine, while he stood before his elders and parents at the young age of 12, and declared: “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” (Luke 2:49).

We have many opportunities to: “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” (Matthew 6:33 NLT).

We make the choice every day in small and great ways that we have an opportunity to do. Our lives here on earth can be a living confession of our faith, by the way we express it. We confess our faith in God when we are baptised, and we continue to confess each day of our lives what we truly believe. How we respond in life is an opportunity to live the way that expresses our faith in God.

What do I believe? The Nicene Creed says it well:

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
