Jesus, the incarnate Son

In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.

1 John 4:9 (ESV)

Human beings are sometimes called ‘children of God’: they are children by adoption but as the header scripture states God sent his only Son (‘unique Son’ ISV – Bible Hub) into the world. The unique Son of God was sent into the world so that we might live through him  who is the Son of God incarnate, the second person of the Trinity. The apostle Paul reveals how he was sent into the world: ‘God sent forth his Son, born of woman…’ (Galatians 4:4); ‘in the likeness of sinful flesh…’ (Romans 8:3); who ‘had to be made like his brothers in every respect…’ (Hebrews 2:17).

Jesus’ existence as a man is a continuation of his prior existence as God the Son. To save us, God became one of us: fully human; he did not abandon his divinity – only God can save us – but he fully clothed himself with humanity. The apostle Paul reinforced this understanding when he stated about Jesus the incarnate Son: ‘For by him all things were created…all things were created through him and for him.’ (Colossians 1:16). Since all things created were created by the Son, he pre-existed all of creation and is therefore uncreated and eternal. Jesus is not a created being made flesh, but the uncreated eternal God made flesh. Since all things were created through him, and for him, the universe has a purpose as the Apostle John stated, “…for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.” (Revelation 4:11)

We are here because God willed it: he wanted us to be here. God has created both men and women in ‘…the image of God’ (Genesis 1:27). As such we are created primarily to be in relationship with God and with each other: ‘Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone…” ’ (Genesis 2:18). It follows, therefore, that at the core of Christianity is a personal relationship with Jesus based on his love for us: Jesus said “…As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love” (John 15:9). This is a love that ‘surpasses knowledge’ (Ephesians 3:19); a love that means he will “never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5), and where, like the apostle Paul, a Christian can say, ‘…the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.’ (Galatians 2:20).

Prayer
Father, we thank you that through love, your Son became incarnate for the salvation of all humanity. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
