The oldest mystery
I enjoy reading mysteries and it seems many people do, considering the plethora of books in that genre. We like the suspense. Some enjoy trying to figure out the clues as to who did what and why. I’m not very good at that and find it more fun to be surprised.
The Bible mentions mysteries a lot – Google tells me 27 to 31 times in the New Testament, and the Greek word Mysterion, ‘refers to a divine truth or plan that was previously hidden but is now revealed by God.’ It’s ‘a secret or something only knowable through revelation.’ You might want to look them up, but in short, the word is used to refer to ‘mysteries of the kingdom of heaven’, the ‘mystery of the church’ (the union of Jewish and Gentile believers), and the ‘mystery of godliness’, among others.
But one statement in particular seems to sum up all the mysteries of the universe. Referring to the gospel, Paul says, ‘I have become its servant by the commission God gave me to present to you the word of God in its fullness-the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the Lord’s people. To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.’ (Colossians 1:25-27 NIV).
If the story of human history were a book in the mystery genre, Christ in you, the hope of glory would be a glorious way to bring all of the threads, clues, hints, types and patterns together. Because of what Jesus did on the cross, and through his resurrection by the power of the Holy Spirit, he is in us. Nothing is more marvellous for the human race than that the Creator and Messiah now lives in believers, sharing his life, strength, glory and the promise of eternity. He is our hope of glory, and for some, the ‘surprise’ ending is that Christ in us is available to everyone. Mystery solved!
