It’s been said we need to know our limits. I know most of mine – like when I need to go to bed to get enough rest; a few ounces of wine is my limit if I want to feel good; a three mile walk seems to be enough; and three or four hot peppers, depending on the heat level, and I’m done. There are many other limits we have to pay attention to, many not of our own making or choice. Driving a vehicle comes with many limits, for our own good and for the good of others. We are also limited in our behaviours, also for our own good and for others. Trying to beat those limits can come with serious consequences.

What about God? Does he have limits? We use words like omnipotent, omniscient, omnibenevolent, omnipresent, omni-temporal and omni-sufficient. The Latin prefix omni means ‘all’ or ‘every’. These words as applied to God certainly imply a being with no limits in any way.

But some would have us believe he does have limits. When it comes to forgiveness, some sins and some people are beyond it. When it comes to his patience, well don’t push him too far. A time will come when he will let loose his anger and take his vengeance. What about a time limit for people who don’t come to Jesus before they die? Does he have a stopwatch and when time’s up, those folks are abandoned to who knows what? Are his grace and mercy restrained by some kind of self-imposed limitations? Does his love come with boundaries? This doesn’t sound like an all-powerful, loving, grace-filled God to me – It sounds like us! We are the ones who put limits and boundaries on our love, mercy, grace and forgiveness.

God has no limits, otherwise he wouldn’t be God. He wouldn’t have sent his one and only beloved son to die for us. He wouldn’t have a plan to include all of humanity – the humanity he lived and died for – to be with him forever and to share his glory and goodness. When we imagine limits to anything about God, we are putting ourselves in his place. We are saying he’s like us. But he’s not like us – his thoughts are not our thoughts and his ways are not our ways. As heaven is higher than earth, his ways are higher than our ways and his thoughts are higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8-9).

We worship a God of no limits, and we can be thankful for that.
