All will see
“And then all people will see the salvation sent from God.”
Luke 3:6 (NLT)
This morning the valley is filling with fog, and the air is already pumped with smoke from people burning their fields. It makes a misty mess, and the lines of things are blurred and indistinct. What is already there is clear enough, but it is hidden from our view by a cloud that fools the eyes and covers the mind with a quiet blanket.
When our header scripture speaks of all people seeing God’s salvation, it is a vision of the eye as well as the mind. The mind has to process what the eyes perceive; they work together in unison, but our minds also have to understand, in its fullness, the truth of what it sees. Yet, despite the lack of clarity that covers our hearts and minds, because we are just human, we are told that all people, throughout all time, will come to see the salvation of God.
For as Isaiah 40:3-5 reveals, the glory of the Lord, God himself with his salvation held out to all will be revealed, no longer hidden because our eyes were blinded or our minds mistook it for something else. It reads: ‘Listen! It’s the voice of someone shouting, “Clear the way through the wilderness for the Lord! Make a straight highway through the wasteland for our God! Fill in the valleys, and level the mountains and hills. Straighten the curves, and smooth out the rough places. Then the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together. The Lord has spoken!”’
All will see, but will all accept the vision of their hearts and minds? How often do we go along with the statement that something is too good to be true? I have grown to disbelieve the declarations by many because of all the lies and deceptions passed on by the few. Yet, I know God has been faithful to me. He is the one light in this dark world that is shining bright for all to see; one that beckons us to come to him for rest and peace, for the comfort our souls beg for.
The Greek for ‘clear the way’ in verse 3 is ‘Prepare the way’. We must prepare our minds to receive the Lord by removing all things that get in the way of our welcome, our acceptance, our understanding of what it means to be rescued and loved like no other can. We do not have to do this work alone; we have God’s Spirit working in us to clean the windows of our minds, remove the barriers we built over time, and level the way to welcome God’s work within us.
What joy our hearts will experience at his coming into our lives. He is already knocking at the door, waiting to be welcomed in. Have you unlatched the door, and hung out the welcome sign? Talk about a family reunion; it blows the mind.
Prayer
Merciful God, help us to prepare the way in our hearts and minds for your return. I look forward, God, to what you have planned for all of humanity. What a glorious celebration there will be when we all come to you in our fulness; one without a hindrance or barrier of any kind. Thank you, God for our inclusion and acceptance into your family. In Jesus we pray! Amen.
