Small and mighty

“You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.”

Luke 1:31 (NIV)

It is amazing how something so small can make a huge impact on your life. The area we live in is now overrun with rodents of some kind or another. I can only think that our recent mild winters may be to blame. I have trouble walking outside without sinking in the ground because of the gopher activity, but what has given me stress beyond measure is the mice that are getting into my car. Small little creatures that have unwittingly created havoc in no time at all.

Our conception, our birth begins in a very small way; imperceptible to most, fragile and with a delicate balance. Jesus entered the world in Mary’s womb, a small way to our thinking, yet a miraculous event as conception is, but in this small way he has made a large and glorious impact on all humanity. The Son of God entered our world unnoticed by most; small and innocent, only protected by the womb of a young woman. What trust the Father must have had in Mary and the ability of his Son to change the world; to redeem his beloved.

We celebrate the birth of Jesus at a specific time of year, yet his coming to us is now and always in our life. As a baby grows in the womb, it also grows into adulthood after birth. Jesus entered our lives, and he is here to stay, he is continually growing in our presence as we learn more and more about who he is. Such a wonderful and exciting journey. No one can remain the same after experiencing Jesus in their lives. I pray for the day that all will come to Jesus and be saved. Jesus has a mighty impact on all of creation.

The presence and impact of Christ in our lives goes on long after Christmas and its celebrations end. God was and always will be big and mighty. I do not have the right words to declare his goodness. What did God go through to make himself small enough to enter our world? What sacrifices he made to place himself in harm’s way for us. We only have a small view of it as parents. We sacrifice ourselves for them, we mourn their loss, we rejoice in their birth and their accomplishments as they grow. The Father was so proud of his Son that he voiced from heaven a declaration of his love for him (Luke 3:22).

What wonderful things does God have in mind for us? Though Jesus came and finished his work here on earth for the Father (John 19:30), his work is not done. He will come again, he has said (Matthew 24:30, 26:64; Revelation 22:20), to take all that belongs to him and make it new. We are his, yes. He has redeemed us, yes, but he has wonderful things still in mind for us. I look forward to the good things God has prepared for us all.

Prayer
Merciful God our Father, we are grateful for all the wonderful things you have done for us. It is not because we have earned them, it is not because we are worthy, but because of your never-ending love for us. What you have begun in us we are assured of its completion. We thank you and praise you God of Love, in Jesus’s name, Amen.
