One Voice

May God, who gives patience and encouragement, help you live in complete harmony with each other, as is fitting for followers of Christ Jesus. Then all of you can join together with one voice, giving praise and glory to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 15:5-6 (NLT)

I remember the times I was so fortunate to be able to sing special music, but it still did not compare to joining in and singing with one of our festival choirs praises to God. It took many hours of individual practice, and quite a few together, but oh the feeling of coming together as one voice of praise; it was just amazing and uplifting for each of us as we drew closer to our God. I have always wondered what it is really like for God’s servants who are praising him around the throne, and I hope that someday I will be able to join in with the heavenly choir in their complete harmony.

There are so many languages and dialects in the world today, and among those there are many lingos [jargon] from such people as plumbers, cattlemen, lawyers, and teachers, for example. It is no wonder we have difficulty communicating with one another. We are told that the followers of Christ need to work together in harmony, and yet we cannot agree on so many things; always wanting things done our way or understood our way. I shy away from giving feedback or giving my thoughts on things in a post, because often just an argument begins about some nuance or detail that they feel is gospel.

So, where is the one voice and harmony? It is not found within mankind alone; it comes when we come together in one voice; the voice of Jesus Christ our Lord and King. It is when the Spirit speaks and we listen. This may be found in the Scriptures written long ago to teach us and give us strength and encouragement, and it may be found in us now as we continue the harmony spoken through God in us by the Spirit. That one voice has to be Jesus’s voice, and as he speaks through us may we all be drawn into that harmony of God speaking through us.

I do not expect everyone to see things my way or understand me correctly; it is a known fact that what you say can be interpreted in many different ways by others. But we do need to seek that harmony through God, asking for his clarification and direction in our lives. As God is the source of our joy, peace, and hope (Romans 15:13), so we need to seek this harmony in God in our conversations; we need to realise we are not always right, it is God who is right, and we who need to listen and learn from him. May God rule in our lives with kindness, patience, and forgiveness.

Prayer
Loving Father, may you give us the ability to represent you to your honour and glory, and to live our lives as a witness of your love, mercy, and grace. In Jesus I pray, Amen.
