I will hold your hand

This is what God the Lord says—the Creator of the heavens, who stretches them out, who spreads out the earth with all that springs from it, who gives breath to its people, and life to those who walk on it: “I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand….”

Isaiah 42:5-6 (NIV)

As we focus on the servant of the Lord spoken of here in Isaiah 42, we come to realise that it is speaking of the Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ, who as the Son of God and maker of the heaven and earth, has entered into our world in order to become one of us, and to show us the true love of God. As we gaze at the created world around us, shaped by his own hands, we are in awe of what God has created, and in awe of the fact that this God of ours did not think it above himself to enter into our humanity and become one of us.

We are still discovering this world, this creation that God has made. New and wonderful things are being revealed that are a part of our world and the cosmos, things that God has stretched out with his own hands. The heavens above are the things we are yet to touch with our hands, They are still beyond our reach and our understanding, They are marvellous and mysterious as they loom before our eyes; they are the future yet to unfold. The promise of God we are yet to receive that glitter like diamonds, or polished gold.

We are yet to discover all that is on our planet earth. These things we are able to touch with our hands and view with our eyes, The makings of our world are complex and wonderfully woven together and they work in harmony with each other, a delicate balance, a delicate dance. God holds these things up with his hands and guides their being with his Spirit. And he comes down to us as a child dependent on our nurture, trusting in a woman to carry him to maturity, because he wants to again hold us with his hands, as we embrace him.

As we embrace our Saviour, we join with him in his righteousness. We take hold of his hand, as he has his Father’s, and we walk forward into his embrace on mission. We as well begin to shine, as we reflect his light, the gospel of Jesus Christ. We take it as a lamp into the world, and the light dispels the darkness, it releases those captive to sin. What a wonderful and marvellous God we have.

I cannot begin to paint our God in his true likeness with my words, but I can say that he loves us so much that he was willing to take on our failings in order to place his righteousness upon us. He reaches into our darkness and takes us by the hand and guides us out of our darkness and into his glorious light. Do we need to fear when God holds our hand?

Prayer
Merciful and mighty God, you take the initiative to enter into our brokenness and you reach in with your love and kindness, taking us by the hand and leading us into your glorious light. How blessed we are to have you as our loving Father, you Jesus as our Saviour, and you Spirit as our gentle guide. We run to you God with open arms. In Jesus I pray, Amen.
