God’s voice
But even as he spoke, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to him.”
Matthew 17:5 (NLT)
We read in Numbers 7:89 that, ‘Whenever Moses went into the Tabernacle to speak with the Lord, he heard the voice speaking to him from between the two cherubim above the Ark’s cover—the place of atonement—that rests on the Ark of the Covenant. The Lord spoke to him from there.’ Now we know God spoke to him in other places; such as the burning bush in the desert (Exodus 3), but this was one place he was sure God would be. We are to listen to the voice of God carefully as mentioned in Exodus 15:26.
We have the voice of God speaking to us through the words of the Bible. It speaks to us all, and it speaks to us every time we pick it up and read. We must set our minds to receiving the messages meant for us all, for we can learn from every word. I believe it is very important to listen to God, but I must admit I have to still my mind and at times I visualise wiping my mind clear of my thoughts in order to hear God speak to me. It is not so much that he is silent, for he is not, I am the one not receptive of his voice. My mind floats off to other things instinctively. Am I alone in this?
This week I had a hard time listening because I am battling a virus. I kept trying to listen and to focus but felt as if I heard nothing at all. My perception was off, I realised, because God had been speaking to me through others all week. They were the voices of guidance and comfort that I needed to allow my mind and body to rest in. Maybe you heard their messages as well?
* …when I have helped someone on their journey home, I have to renew, refresh, and rededicate myself to the simple, profound, and miraculous words of our Lord.
* …no matter how dark my day may seem, Jesus is always with me.
* Sometimes I wonder where God is in this mess, but he’s always there.
* Speaking of Psalm 103: God is quick to forgive, but we have difficulty forgiving ourselves.
* Psalm 100:5 ‘For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.’ This kind of statement does not come from a person who has never known loss. It comes from someone who has walked through dark places and found God was still there, even when the answers were not.
* For salt to be useful it must be applied…We are already placed where God wants us – in our family, our workplace, our community, and our circle of friends. The question is not where we are, but whether we are living out who we are.
So, here we are lifting up our voices together in praise to God, and in support of one another, and I have only mentioned a few examples. God is speaking through us and to us in so many wonderful ways. I do not remember the exact words, but someone said this week that God joins in with us as we do the things that bring us joy. Do you find it joy sharing the word of God? Oh, I do, and I am glad God is joining in with me doing this; or should I say, allowing me to join in with him as I do so.
Prayer
Merciful God, may we still ourselves long enough to hear you speak to us and recognise you speaking through others. Your voice is like a soothing healing ointment to our souls. I praise you in Jesus, Amen.
