The Father’s will

“This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.’ ”

Matthew 6:9-10 (NIV)

Praying in accordance with the Father’s will is of paramount importance. Jesus, the very Son of God, declares that he will not do anything that is contrary to his Father’s will: “For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.” (John 6:38). How can we know the Father’s will? Jesus explains: “For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.” (John 6:40 NIV). The Father wills that we look to Jesus and place trust in him, in whose name alone we pray to the Father. And we can have confidence that God hears our prayers: ‘This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.’ (1 John 5:14).

Our triune God has our best interest in his heart; his will for us is perfect. He tells us, ‘Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.’ (Romans 12:2).

To follow Jesus Christ is clearly God’s will for his children, and whereby we participate in the holy, loving relationship of our triune God: ‘For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves…’ {Colossians 1:13). These circumstances are being used by the Father to form the very image of his beloved Son in us.

The apostle Paul wrote about this in a letter to the churches in Galatia: ‘My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you…’ (Galatians 4:19).

Prayer
Father in heaven, please let your will be accomplished in my life. And may the Holy Spirit lead me to follow Jesus Christ as he accomplishes your will for me. In Jesus’s name I pray. Amen
