An abundant life
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”
John 10:10 (ESV)
When I think of life, I think of the many forms of life on earth. We continue to discover new forms of life on earth and now look for its existence on other planets. God is the creator of this life we know of. He gathered his materials together; some call this the ‘Big Bang’, and then he arranged them in the right and perfect order for our planet and the life it holds to flourish and multiply. We are told that God created this life, gives life to this world, and sustains it (Genesis 1:1-2:3; John 6:33). I assume God loves life, because of the abundant life he created and that he is continuing to create it and uphold it with his power and love.
Life is more than just breathing and moving forward, though I am grateful for this. Life is more than what the world calls ‘really living’; for this is often attributed to the abundance of what one possesses. Sure, we gain pleasure in new things, but this is not what we are searching for, or we would not need to keep possessing more and more to make ourselves happy. No life is not in the things we possess. So, what is this life that John 10:10 is talking about? We are told in Romans 8:10 (NLT): ‘And Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God.’
We have been made right with God, by and through the righteousness and sacrifice of Christ. An abundant life is not one with the most possessions, but one that is lived in and for Christ. The more I look to God for this life, the more I appreciate what God has done for me and is continuing to do, the more I find pleasure in this life, for God is our life in so many ways. We need to come to this realisation and embrace it. I am pleased with what God has given me, and satisfied, yet God still wants us to have this life even more abundantly. How is this made possible?
The only way I can visualise this now is that if God is our life, he wants us to have more and more of him; more of this life of God within us. Is this what David is speaking of in Psalm 23:5 where he says his cup runs over? God is giving us more than we can hold, and it overflows and pours out. God is the abundant giver, and he does not spare anything for us; he proved this on the cross. Now, as he gives us more of himself than we can hold, we now have the ability to give this life, in the form of the gospel of Christ, and the love of God, his distinctive touch to others. The life of Christ will flow from us and touch the lives of those around us. Now that is abundant living!
Prayer
Father, I thank you for this life, an abundant life, a life of purpose and a life lived with and for you. Thank you for sending your Son to give us this life, and thank you, Jesus, for laying down your life so that we may join in with you in your life of righteousness. Thank you Holy Spirit, for guiding us and bringing us the joys of a life lived in the presence and life of God. May we share this abundant life with all we meet. I praise you God! In Jesus I pray! Amen.
