Open your eyes to Jesus
Then their eyes were opened and they recognised him…
Luke 24:31 (NIVUK)
Timing and recognition are central to the walk towards Emmaus. Christians often find themselves, like Cleopas and his companion, burdened by the ‘Friday mindset’ of loss, and unable to see the ‘Sunday reality’ of the resurrection standing right next to them.
In Luke 24, we see two followers who were ‘kept from recognising’ Jesus. They were so blinded by their own expectations of who the Messiah should be – a conquering king sent to overthrow Rome – that they couldn’t see the crucified and risen Saviour who was actually there. They spoke of him in the past tense: ‘He was a prophet…’ (v.19).
How often do we do the same, building our hope on what we want God to do, rather than on who he actually is? The turning point comes in two beautiful stages of revelation:
1. The word opened: Jesus opened the Scriptures from Moses through to the Prophets, and revealed how all history pointed towards the necessity of his suffering and glory. This is where the ‘heartburn’ begins – the spiritual awakening that happens when the word of God meets a seeking soul.
2. The bread broken: When Cleopas and his companion finally sat at the table and Jesus took, blessed, and broke the bread, their eyes were finally opened (vv.28-32), and ‘Jesus was recognised by them when he broke the bread.’ (v.35).
We all travel the road to Emmaus at times, heartbroken by a fallen world. But when we invite Jesus in, he lifts us up through his word and reveals himself in the ‘breaking of bread’ in our daily lives. Once our eyes are opened, we cannot stay still; like the disciples, we are compelled to turn back and share the news: ‘It’s true! The Lord has risen!’ (v.34)
Prayer
Our wonderful, loving Father, you came to open our eyes to truth, justice, love, and peace. Help us to see Jesus as he really is – not just as we expect him to be. Give us the grace to invite him into our homes and our hearts, and once our eyes are opened, empower us to share that light with the whole world. In Jesus Christ’s holy name, Amen.
