Friends of God
For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son. So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.
Romans 5:10-11 (NLT)
I never really believed that I was an enemy of God. It is shocking to think that I was, that we all were. I did not intentionally go actively fighting against him in my mind. How about you? I did not consider my disobedience, and my indifference to be a sin against God, but there it is, we were his enemies and still he did not hold it against us as a barrier that could never be breached. As it is said, there is nothing too impossible for God.
I remember being asked about when I thought sin was first counted against us in our lives, and I had to say at birth. I was born into sin as we all have been since Adam and Eve first believed and fell for that lie. And in doing so they cast a dark shadow over God’s reputation. The first enemy of God that I know of is that snake Satan who began his war against God’s children in order to malign God. At least that is my take on the subject. I am sure there is a lot more I need to learn about the incident, but I will have to wait for the Father to explain it to me in time.
It really does not make sense that we could be guilty of killing the Son of God, and then end up a friend with God. We humans tend to love retaliation, and condemnation; we like to hold onto an offence. And yet someone once said that the best way to get rid of an enemy is to make them your friend. We have fought God in one way or another since the beginning of time, and yet God has still pursued us in his love. He removed our shame and guilt, he came to us when we were clueless of our own self destruction, and he tore down the wall of division that we ourselves put up; some of us did it in ignorance and some in outright defiance.
What love we have in God. There is no enemy strong enough to keep us out of the Fathers loving hands; not even ourselves. We can, as these verses say, now rejoice in this new wonderful relationship we have with God. It is an amazing and wonderful relationship we now have between us. You can try to ignore it, but we have done this way too long with only negative results. We can embrace it and blossom in God’s care. The choice is yours of course.
We can rejoice in our trials and troubles, rejoice when we are completely helpless and vulnerable, because we know that we gain growth in our troubles, yes, but we also rejoice because God is with us holding us up and giving us his victory. He is a true friend, faithful and kind.
The words to Friend in Jesus by Cain ring in my ear:
‘Oh, I have found a friend in Jesus.
He is everything to me.
I have found a friend in Jesus.
Yes, he is my everything!
Thank you Lord!’
Prayer
Merciful God. thank you for our rescue, your faithfulness and dedication to us. Thank you God for our salvation. Yes, you are everything to us and we love you God. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
