Huldah: a faithful voice of God’s grace

Part of a series – Extraordinary women in the Bible

…because your heart was responsive and you humbled yourself before the Lord when you heard what I have spoken…and because you tore your robes and wept in my presence, I also have heard you, declares the Lord.

2 Kings 22:19 (NIVUK)

When we think of extraordinary women in the Bible, Huldah probably doesn’t come to mind. Yet tucked away within the story of King Josiah’s reforms is the remarkable account of this prophetess whom God worked with at a critical moment in Israel’s history. During Josiah’s reign, the Book of the Law was discovered in the temple. Realising how far the nation had strayed from God’s ways, the king sought the Lord’s guidance. Surprisingly, his delegation did not go to a priest or a male prophet, instead, they went to Huldah (2 Kings 22:14–20).

God had entrusted his word to her, and his people recognised her spiritual authority. Huldah faithfully delivered God’s message without either softening the truth or exaggerating it. She spoke honestly about the consequences of Judah’s rebellion while also proclaiming God’s mercy toward Josiah because of his humble and repentant heart.

Huldah’s ministry points us to several important truths:

God works with whom he chooses Huldah reminds us that God’s calling is not determined by social status, gender, or human expectations. God’s grace equips ordinary people for extraordinary service. The same Spirit who empowered Huldah continues to call and gift believers today for participation in Christ’s ministry.
Grace does not ignore truthHuldah’s message contained both judgment and mercy. God’s grace is never a denial of reality: it confronts sin honestly while opening the door to repentance and restoration. In Jesus Christ, we see the fullest expression of this truth. God does not overlook sin, but in grace he takes its burden upon himself, and offers reconciliation.
God honours humble heartsThe heart of Huldah’s prophecy was not merely the coming judgment but God’s gracious response to Josiah’s humility. Josiah could not save the nation through his efforts, but he could respond to God with repentance and trust. Likewise, our relationship with God does not rest on our performance but on Christ’s faithfulness and our humble participation in his life.
God’s word leads to renewalHuldah’s message became a catalyst for spiritual renewal in Judah. Whenever God’s word is received with faith, transformation follows. Through Jesus, the living Word, God continues to renew his people and draw them into his kingdom mission.

As you reflect on the life of Huldah, remember that God often accomplishes his greatest purposes through those who are simply willing to trust him and faithfully respond to his call. Huldah did not seek prominence, yet God worked with her at a pivotal moment in Israel’s history. The same gracious God who worked through her is at work in your life today. No matter your role, season of life, or circumstances, you are included in Christ and invited to participate in what he is doing in the world. So, walk forward with confidence, knowing that God’s grace goes before you, his Spirit empowers you, and Jesus’s faithfulness will sustain you as you serve him each day.

Prayer
Loving Father, thank you for the example of Huldah, a faithful servant who listened to your voice and courageously spoke your word. Thank you that your grace calls and equips ordinary people to participate in your extraordinary work. Strengthen us to be faithful witnesses in our homes, workplaces, and communities, and may our lives reflect your love, truth, and grace so that others may come to know you. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
