I had reached a London mainline railway station and was making my way across town to catch another train to the north. I had to take two different Underground lines to get to it. I had luggage with me and the route I took was very short on escalators. My case seemed to get heavier the more stairs I went up and down. I was getting tired. Remarkably, as I grew wearier, I began to get offers of help: about five or six times someone came alongside me and offered to carry my case.

I gained a decided spring in my step from receiving such kindness, brought about simply by someone who saw my need. The Underground and the railway stations are full of people with minds focused on their way, scurrying around to find their destination. So I was grateful and appreciative for the ones who, in the midst of the hustle and bustle, had actually noticed a solitary traveller struggling a bit.

It made me consider how aware I am of other’s needs. We can be so busy, or in such a hurry that we don’t see them. I had people who literally fulfilled the headline scripture and carried my burden. May we not be so preoccupied that we are unable to see others’ needs. Paul wrote to the Philippians to urge them ‘…not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.’ (Philippians 2:4). May we have eyes to see what is needed.
