I remember watching, many years ago now, a preacher who demanded healing in the name of Jesus. It was quite impressive; it was meant to be of course. The person being healed would fall backward and be lifted to their feet, healed by this preacher. There were other preachers who tried to convince everyone that they could gain wealth and fame by using the powerful name of Jesus. They were using the name of Jesus as some sort of tool, magic device to get what they deemed as something they were worthy of, or that they should grab before everyone else did. To me this is using the name of Jesus in a very disrespectful and abusive way, a breaking of the command by God to not misuse his name (Exodus 20:7).

So, is there power in the name of Jesus? There definitely is. There is life in the power of the name of Jesus. It is by his authority and sacrifice that we have life abundant. This is not something we conjure up in order to attain, this is something God himself has taken the initiative to do for us. While we were sinners, enemies of God, he still came to us and became one of us, in order to take on our punishment and our condemnation, in order to make us right with himself, restoring our broken relationship; placing upon us his own righteousness. This is done in the name and authority of the one who he is, God almighty, our Saviour and King, Jesus.

Now we may ask for something to be done in the name and authority of Jesus. Jesus himself said that if we ask in his name it will be done, “You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father” (John 14:13). Notice who will fulfil the request; Jesus, not us by the use of the name. For the request to be honoured it must bring glory to the Father through the Son and by the Spirit. The one asking must believe in Jesus and recognise his authority over their lives and honour his name (v. 12).

John has been telling his story of how he and the disciples came to believe in Jesus; recognising that he is the Messiah, the Son of God. John spoke of the many ways in which Jesus demonstrated that he was truly the Son of God by the miraculous things that he did, and how he entered our world in order to bring us life, his life. John wants us to believe this truth as well and to have this life of Jesus, eternal life with him. It was Jesus who took the initiative to come down to us in our brokenness and to turn this brokenness into healing. It is by his name and authority that we are healed. It is in his name and authority that we have life; his life within us.

There is power in the name of Jesus. In Jesus we find redemption, salvation, healing, loving, forgiving, and restoring to name just a few attributes. May all knees bow to the name of Jesus for there is no other like our God of love, mercy, and grace, Amen.
