The story of Ruth is not merely the story of an extraordinary woman; it is the story of an extraordinary God whose grace transforms lives and draws people into his redemptive purposes. Ruth’s admirable qualities did not earn God’s favour, rather, they were the fruit of a life responding to God’s gracious work, as he was bringing a Moabite, a foreigner, outside the covenant community of Israel, to himself. Ruth’s response to God’s grace already at work in her life, included:

Faith – Ruth trusted God despite not knowing what the future held. She left behind her homeland and familiar surroundings and journeyed into uncertainty. Her faith reminds us that Christian faith is not about self-reliance but about trusting in the faithfulness of Jesus, who is the ‘faithful witness’: the ultimate, trustworthy source of truth and salvation (Revelation 1:5).

Self-giving love and loyalty – Ruth’s commitment to Naomi reflected the kind of love that seeks the good of others. Genuine love originates in God himself (1 John 4:19), and Ruth’s devotion points us to the self-giving love perfectly revealed in Jesus, who gave himself for the world (1 Timothy 2:5-6).

Humility – Ruth did not demand recognition or privilege. She willingly served, worked long hours in the fields, and gratefully received the kindness shown to her. Humility flows from knowing that all we have is a gift from God. Ruth understood her dependence on God’s provision and care, and reflects the humility of Jesus who ‘…humbled himself by becoming obedient to death – even death on a cross!’ (Philippians 2:8). 

Perseverance – Despite grief, poverty, and uncertainty, Ruth continued faithfully to fulfil her responsibilities. Her perseverance was not merely human determination: it demonstrated a growing trust that God was present and active even in difficult circumstances. This foreshadowed the perseverance of Jesus, who endured opposition from sinners and endured the cross to bring us salvation (Hebrews 12:1-3).

Ruth’s story culminated in God’s provision through Boaz, the kinsman-redeemer, who points us towards Jesus Christ our true Redeemer (Ruth 4). Boaz’s role foreshadowed the greater redemption accomplished through Christ, who reconciles humanity to the Father and welcomes all people into the life of the Trinity, through grace. Ultimately, Ruth’s story reminds us that God’s grace is inclusive, transformative, and redemptive. A gentile widow became part of the lineage of King David and, generations later, of Jesus Christ himself. God did not choose Ruth because of her accomplishments, rather, through his grace, he drew her into his unfolding plan of salvation for the world.

As we reflect on Ruth’s qualities, it is important to remember that the Christian life is not about striving to earn God’s acceptance; we are already accepted in Christ. Like Ruth, we are invited to respond to God’s grace with the faith, love, loyalty, humility, and faithful perseverance found in and through Jesus. In this way, we share in the life of Jesus and participate in what he is doing in the world.
