Among the extraordinary women of the Bible, Esther stands out as a woman of courage, humility, wisdom, and faithful obedience. Although God’s name is never mentioned in the book of Esther, his gracious providence is evident throughout. Her story reminds us that God is always at work, often behind the scenes, accomplishing his purposes through those who respond faithfully to his call.

Esther was a young Jewish woman living in exile, seemingly insignificant in the eyes of the world. Yet she was elevated to become queen of Persia. This was not simply a matter of human circumstance but part of God’s greater purpose. God graciously positioned Esther where she could become a blessing to others and save her people. In the same way, God places each of us in particular situations and relationships through which we can participate in his work. We are included in God’s saving purposes not because of our merit, but because of his grace.

Haman, a top government official in King Xerxes’ government, wanted all the Jews in the kingdom destroyed, and persuaded the king to agree to his plan. When Esther’s cousin Mordecai informed her of Haman’s plot to destroy the Jewish people, she faced a difficult decision (Esther 3 and 4). Approaching the king without invitation could cost her life, yet she chose to act, declaring, ‘If I perish, I perish’ (Esther 4:10-16). Her courage was not based on reckless self-confidence but on a willingness to entrust herself to God’s care and purposes.

As Christians, we are called to participate in God’s mission through Jesus Christ. Like Esther, we are invited to join in what God is already doing in the world. We do not serve in our own strength but through the grace of God and the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit.

Esther used her position not for personal advantage but for the welfare of others. She identified with her people and risked everything on their behalf. In this way, Esther points us to Jesus Christ, the ultimate Advocate and Deliverer. While Esther risked her life to save her people, Jesus willingly gave his life for the salvation of the world. Through his life, death, resurrection, and ascension, God has acted decisively to bring reconciliation, forgiveness, and hope.

Esther’s example encourages us to recognise that God has a purpose for our lives. We may never stand before kings, but every day we are given opportunities to reflect Christ’s love, speak truth, pursue justice, and show compassion. God’s grace equips us for each of these moments. As we reflect on Esther’s remarkable journey, let us remember that the same faithful God who guided her life is at work in ours. Even when we cannot see his hand, we can trust his purpose. Like Esther, may we respond with courage, faith, and obedience, confident that God has placed us where we are ‘for such a time as this.’
