One day at a time
“So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.”
Matthew 6:34 (NLT)
When we were young the biggest problem we had seemed to be whether our friends could come out and play. As we got older the problems seemed to grow as if they had a life of their own. That is because we have just become more aware of them and have taken on the responsibility of them. We cannot ignore them and hope they go away, but we also cannot handle everything at the same time; if we try, we burn out and nothing is done correctly.
Matthew has been talking about the basic cares of everyday life such as food, clothing, and shelter. We tend to focus on these things more than we should. It becomes more of a statement about who we are in this era then it is with modesty and warmth. God knows full well what we need, and he provides it in many ways. The sun shines, the rain falls, and the soil provides the miracle of abundant food. We are given the wisdom to care for ourselves and for the needs of others.
God loves and cares for us every day. And though the basic needs for life here on earth are important, there is another need that is even more important: our salvation and our relationship with God, our provider. We must not neglect this relationship. Worrying about the future will only create anxiety and illness. If we let worry overtake us, it does not produce anything positive. We need to put our trust, our faith in the One who will give us the help, give us the answers, and the support for everyday living.
I can only live one day at a time, and if I live that day in thankfulness and gratitude to God for all he has provided for that day, I am truly blessed. He has the future, my future and yours, under his control. I may not understand the troubles I face, but God is working with me in them all. I will not be free of troubles because trouble follows us all, it is a part of our life now here on earth. Sure, this life has its difficulties, and it has the unexpected, but God walks with me through it all. It is in him that my faith and trust must rest, not in my own power.
As I put my faith in my God, my maker, I glorify my relationship. I honour his goodness, I point to his faithfulness. I tell the world what a great God we have. I direct others to his loving and caring arms. They praise his name and put their trust in him. Our life is so important to God, that he has gone to the extreme to make sure we are not only cared for daily, but also cared for, for all eternity. If God will send his Son to die for us, he will surely not allow this life of ours to be lost.
God has connected us to him in such a way that we are a unified part of his life. This relationship allows our growth in his character. We are protected under his care and his powerful existence. His life has now become our own as we dwell in him. We are never out of his sight, out of his reach. So why should we worry when God lifts us up, and draws us close to him day after day.
Prayer
Father God, as we put our faith in you, our fears into your hands, we experience true life worth living. We will worry, that is our experience, but we also have your support to cast those worries away and give them to you. Thank you God for giving us what we need for every day, and the assurance of your presence with us. In Jesus we pray, Amen.
