Waiting can be one of the greatest challenges of the Christian life. We pray, we trust, and we hope, yet the answers we long for often seem delayed. In those moments we may wonder whether God has forgotten us. Elizabeth’s story assures us that he never does. Luke describes Elizabeth as a woman who, together with her husband Zechariah, was ‘righteous in the sight of God’ (Luke 1:6). Yet despite her faithful walk with the Lord, she endured many years of disappointment and unfulfilled longing. Childlessness carried both personal grief and social shame, and as the years passed, her hopes of becoming a mother appeared to disappear altogether. 

Elizabeth did not know that, even while she waited, God was preparing her for a unique place in his saving purposes. At the appointed time, by his grace alone, he blessed her with a son, John the Baptist, who would prepare the way for Jesus, the Messiah. God’s apparent delay was not his absence. He had been faithfully working all along.

When God’s promise became reality, Elizabeth did not congratulate herself for her perseverance or imagine that she had somehow earned his blessing. Instead, as the header scripture records, she humbly confessed, ‘The Lord has done this for me.’ She recognised that everything she had received flowed from God’s gracious favour rather than her own merit. Her faithful waiting became a joyful response to God’s faithfulness.

Elizabeth’s response did not end there. Filled with the Holy Spirit when Mary visited, she immediately recognised the presence of the unborn Jesus and rejoiced in the fulfilment of God’s promises (vv.39-45). Even before Christ’s public ministry began, Elizabeth’s life was already pointing others to him. Her faith was expressed not only in patient waiting but also in joyful worship and Spirit-inspired witness.

We too experience seasons when God’s purposes seem hidden from view. Yet because of Jesus Christ, we know that God has already declared his everlasting ‘Yes’ to humanity. Our waiting is therefore never empty or hopeless. The Holy Spirit enables us to trust God’s timing, even when we cannot yet understand it, and to recognise his grace when it comes.

Elizabeth teaches us that faithful waiting is not passive resignation but confident hope in the God who always keeps his promises. As we wait upon the Lord, we can respond as she did – with humble gratitude, joyful worship, and a willingness to participate in the gracious work he is already accomplishing through his Son.
