Life together in Christ

Part of a series – Grace for the journey

Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

Ephesians 4:3 (NIVUK)

Have you ever found it difficult to get along with someone in your congregation? Perhaps you have felt misunderstood, disappointed by another person’s behaviour, or struggled to understand a different point of view. Although Christian fellowship matters deeply, living together in love can sometimes be challenging. Yet the good news is that we do not have to manufacture the Church’s unity through our own efforts; in Jesus Christ, God has welcomed us into a new relationship with himself and brought us together as his people. The Father loves us and sent his Son to reconcile us to himself. Through Jesus’s incarnation, life, death, resurrection and ascension, humanity has been brought into a new relationship with the Father, and through the Holy Spirit we are drawn into the Son’s relationship with the Father and share in the life of the Triune God.

The Church is therefore more than a gathering of people who share similar beliefs or interests: we belong to one another because we belong to Christ. Our unity rests not on our personalities, preferences or backgrounds, but on Jesus himself and the eternal communion of love shared by the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In the header scripture, Paul urges believers to ‘keep the unity of the Spirit’. He does not tell us to create this unity from scratch, rather, he calls us to live in a way that reflects the unity God has graciously given us in Christ. This does not mean that disagreements disappear or that unity requires everyone to think alike. We remain different people, with different experiences, gifts and perspectives. Christ calls us to approach these differences with humility, patience, forgiveness and love.

Seeking unity does not mean pretending that harm has not occurred or avoiding difficult conversations. Christlike love makes room for truth, repentance, appropriate boundaries and reconciliation wherever possible; as the Holy Spirit draws us into Christ’s life and ministry, we are enabled to share in his love for others. When we listen carefully, encourage someone who feels forgotten, forgive where possible or make room for another person’s contribution, we respond to Christ’s initiative and participate in his continuing ministry.

We do not act to earn a place in God’s family; we act because, in Christ, we have already been welcomed. Grace received becomes love graciously shared. Jesus, the living head of his Church, continues to care for his people and work among them through the Holy Spirit. He invites every member to participate according to their gifts, circumstances and opportunities. This may mean active service, prayer, encouragement, receiving care or simply being present in the community. Everyone belongs.

Perhaps someone needs encouragement this week, or a strained relationship needs patient attention. You do not have to solve every problem or carry the Church on your shoulders. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you respond to the person before you with Christ’s love. Our unity rests in Jesus, who holds us together in grace. As we receive his love, we can reflect that love in our life together and trust him to continue his gracious work among us.

Prayer
Loving Father, thank you for welcoming us through Jesus Christ. Lord Jesus, teach us to love one another as you have loved us. Holy Spirit, help us live out the unity you have given us, with patience, truth, forgiveness and compassion. May our life together reflect the love of the Triune God. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
